The defending world champion Nationals have the best rotation in baseball — Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, Patrick Corbin and Anibal Sanchez — and are built for the long haul.
But it must not be forgotten that, for all that pitching, they were 27-33 and in fourth place at 60-game juncture last year.
They, too, took a major hit in the middle of their lineup when Anthony Rendon defected to the Angels and they did not come close to adequately replacing him.
But you don’t have to go out on a limb to predict a monster year and abbreviated short season MVP for Juan Soto.
