“Sometimes in this game, we play the game for specific reasons,” Rivera told his team. “And sometimes we play it for our family and for our loved ones. Sometimes we lose them. And when we do it’s tough on the soul. But I tell you, though, when you’ve had somebody that’s been on your side a long time you play for them.
“And I’m gonna go ahead give this one to Brandon Scherff.”
According to ESPN’s John Keim, Scherff’s grandfather died earlier this week.
