OVI TO CAPS OWNER TED LEONSIS: I WANT BACK, HOW ABOUT A NEW DEAL!

By Lewis Gould

During his exit interview today Caps star Alex Ovechkin, who is an unrestricted free agent, said he wants a new deal.

He’s dealing directly with owner Ted Leonsis and general manager Brian MacLellan.

Ovechkin, the team’s longtime captain, has been eligible to sign an extension for nearly a year, but it hasn’t happened yet.

His 13-year, $124 million contract expired following the Capitals’ 3-1 loss to the Bruins in Game 5 of their first-round Stanley Cup playoff series.

“I’m confident. We still have time. Obviously, I want to finish my career here,” Ovechkin said when asked about his future with the team.

Ovechkin, 35, has spent his entire 16-year career with the Capitals. He’s scored 730 career goals in 1,197 games and played in 141 career playoff games. In 2018, he led Washington to its lone Stanley Cup title.
