Nathan Eovaldi limited the Yankees to one run over 5 1/3 innings in last night’s American League Wild Card Game, striking out eight as the Red Sox won 6-2 to advance to the ALDS.
The Yanks Gerrit Cole was outpitched as Eovaldi gave up a single in the first and a single in the second but had retired 11 straight — six strikeouts — before Anthony Rizzo hooked one high and around Pesky’s Pole with one out in the sixth. Aaron Judge followed with an infield single and manager Alex Cora then came out with the quick hook, lifting Eovaldi at 71 pitches.
The move looked like it would immediately backfire when Ryan Brasier gave up a laser off the Green Monster to Giancarlo Stanton, but Judge was thrown out at the plate and Brasier got out of it.
Boston’s bullpen ultimately held the Yankees to one run over 3 2/3 innings to finish off the victory.
Eovaldi’s already-elite velocity was up even higher in this one, and he induced 13 whiffs while posting a 37 percent CSW.
The Red Sox now move on to the ALDS to face the Rays, with Game 1 coming Thursday night in Tampa Bay.
