The Athletic is reporting that Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is set to interview for the Commanders’ vacant offensive coordinator position.
Which, if he takes it and Ron Rivera gets broomed, a distinct possibility, Bieniemy would be in line to be the Commanders head coach.
Bieniemy, who is coming off a Super Bowl victory with the Chiefs, will be the eighth candidate to interview with the Commanders for the offensive coordinator job.
Washington fired former offensive coordinator Scott Turner in January.
Bieniemy has spent 10 seasons with the Chiefs and the past five as offensive coordinator. In those five seasons, Kansas City has never ranked below sixth in total offense or points scored. The Chiefs have also won two Super Bowls during that stretch.
Bieniemy helped the Chiefs erase a 10-point deficit in the second half of Sunday’s Super Bowl win over the Eagles.
On the surface, a two-time Super Bowl champion offensive coordinator interviewing for a “lateral” move with arguably the league’s most dysfunctional franchise is the definition of a head-scratcher. That is until you look a layer or two below the headline. Not all OC titles are created equal.
Kansas City’s offense is Andy Reid’s offense. Bieniemy would call the shots — and plays — in Washington, something he’s yet to do during his NFL coaching career. Taking on those duties — and succeeding — may thrust him back into the head coaching cycle next year.
