The Athletic is reporting that the Commanders’ star defensive tackle Daron Payne has agreed to a four-year, $90 million contract, $60 million of which is guaranteed.
Washington placed the franchise tag on Payne on Feb. 28. The tag carried an $18.937 million cap figure for the 2023 season if Payne had signed the tender and didn’t receive a long-term contract.
Payne, 25, was named to the Pro Bowl after posting a career-best 11 1/2 sacks and 64 combined tackles last season.
Payne is entering his sixth season with the Commanders, who selected him with the No. 13 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He’s started 75 out of 81 career games he’s played and tallied 291 tackles, 26 sacks and 55 quarterback hits.
Last season, Payne was a stalwart on a Washington defense that ranked No. 3 in the NFL in yards allowed and No. 7 in points allowed per game.
