The Nationals have announced that pitching prospect Cade Cavalli has a Grade 3 UCL sprain and will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery.
Washington selected Cavalli, 24, with the No. 22 pick in the 2020 MLB Draft.
He tossed 5 2/3 innings in spring training this year, posting a 1.59 ERA and 0.71 WHIP.
The injury is a massive blow to a Nationals team whose rebuild depends solely on the organization’s ability to develop its young talent.
Cavalli, who made his highly-publicized big league debut in August, will now try to be ready to pitch in 2024. For Washington, it’s 12-18 months of time that Cavalli won’t spend getting better, but rather getting healthy.
