Sam Howell will open the season as the Commanders quarterback.
Coach Ron Rivera revealed the decision before this morning’s practice.
While those outside the local market remained skeptical about Washington turning to an inexperienced player with one career start, the team began positioning Howell as QB1 in January and gave him virtually all the first-team reps in training camp. Howell consulted with offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and quarterbacks coach Tavita Pritchard after the two joint practices this week at Baltimore.
Rivera has long eyed those joint practices against the Ravens as a final test for Howell. With Howell having passed it, the coach made the decision.
“He’s met the challenge,” Rivera said Friday.
Howell will play Monday night when the Commanders host the Ravens in Washington’s second preseason game.
