BRISSETT TO START FOR COMMANDERS VS NINERS: DOES HOWELL HAVE A FUTURE IN DC?

By Max Harper

Commanders coach Ron Rivera has announced that veteran QB Jacoby Brissett would start in Washington’s Week 17 game against San Francisco.

Sam Howell’s recent slump coincides with the Commanders’ six-game losing streak during which the NFC East squad was eliminated from the playoffs. It also dampened the notion of Howell remaining QB1 in 2024.

Howell has thrown eight interceptions with two touchdown passes in Washington’s last five games and only 285 passing yards in losses to the Miami Dolphins, Los Angeles Rams and New York Jets. He finished 6 of 22 for 56 yards in Sunday’s road loss to the New York Jets and was benched in the third quarter following his second interception. Howell’s 1.7 QB rating was the league’s lowest by a substantial margin.

Washington rallied in the last two games when Brissett entered after halftime, scoring touchdowns on his first five drives, including three in Sunday’s last-second 30-28 loss in which the Commanders trailed 27-7. But this is about Howell’s future more than Washington’s present.
